About Orthodontic Treatment
Typically, people associate orthodontic treatment with the teen years, after most of permanent teeth have come in. However, if our annual dental exam shows problems with the alignment of a younger child’s bite, we may recommend interceptive orthodontics to begin correcting the problem early, before it causes problems with larger and more numerous permanent teeth. Whether we begin before or after the permanent teeth emerge, we have a number of options to correct the alignment of the teeth, including:
We now have many options in braces that make them more colourful and fun to wear or smaller and less noticeable than the metal braces we wore 20 years ago.
Beyond the hardware, the other essential for orthodontic treatment is time. Typically, depending on the severity of the misalignment and the age of the patient, orthodontic treatment takes a couple of years with regular office visits to gently and gradually adjust the braces and push the teeth into place.
We are very pleased to be offering Invisalign® at our office. Invisalign® allows us to orthodontically move teeth without the need for braces. The process involves wearing a series of thin clear plastic trays over both the top and bottom teeth. These trays must be worn at all times with the exception of eating and brushing. Every two weeks or so, the current set of trays are discarded and a new set of trays begins. The entire process usually takes six to 18 months depending on the complexity of the case.
Maintaining your daily dental hygiene and professional cleaning are even more important while you are wearing braces because the braces tend to trap plaque that may cause decay and stains. The staff at Alliston Kind Dentistry will show you how to care for your braces and your teeth during treatment.
